Postcards are being scanned & archived!

    Portsmouth Poet Laureate: Mark DeCarteret

Wow!  We got so many postcards on 5/7 at the Release Party!!  We're sorting through all of them and will be scanning and archiving them over the next couple of months.

In the meantime, Save the Date:  Sept. 28!  PPLP is hosting a fun evening at the Sheraton with silent and live auctions for postcards along with music and refreshments.

Still have postcards to turn in?  Bring your postcards to the Poetry Hoot at Cafe Espresso on June 2 (7-9 p.m.), or mail them in an envelope to PPLP, PO Box 1196, Portsmouth NH 03802.  Please take the time to fill out an information form for each postcard.

From Mark DeCarteret, Poet Laureate:
First introduced in the late 19th century, postcards provided a cheap and convenient alternative to letters (honey, have you seen my sealing wax?), reaching their peak in 1908 when 677 million were handled by the post office.  The Portsmouth Poet Laureate Program thinks their moment has come once again; this time with a bit of a twist.  Wish You Were Where?: The Postcard Project encourages poets of all ages and abilities to send one of their poems (along with a stamp and return address) to an artist of their choice (as many as they’d like as long as each written piece is different) who will respond to the work by providing an illustration as the front of the postcard.  And then drop it in a mailbox. ...(more)

Tips for Poets & Artists:  (send us yours!)
1. Consider the artist's medium when choosing postcard stock to send.  Send heavier stock to oil painters, collagists, etc.  Artists:  it's fine to reinforce a postcard you receive from a poet
2. Art supply stores may sell postcard (or other paper) stock in different weights and sizes and have a better selection than office supply stores.  Some suggest looking for at least 100 lb. weight/16 pt. stock.  http://www.thepapermillstore.com/product.php?productid=11996
3. Try scrapbooking paper, wallpaper samples, etc.  Check with post office (or post office regulations below) for weight requirements
