Kate Leigh

img_2530Kate Leigh, Portsmouth’s tenth Poet Laureate, has focused her project on engaging youth in Portsmouth and surrounding communities, by offering classroom-based workshops and public programs throughout the Seacoast area. The emphasis of these workshops include using poetry to contribute to a more peaceful world with specific prompts for discussing Portsmouth’s newly opened African Burying Ground, presented as an example of a good community response to a social injustice.

Kate has staged various events to showcase the work of local poets young and old, such as the celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. at the South Church, and a workshop showcase and gallery showing staged at Ceres Bakery.

She continues the work of encouraging young poets by hosting a Youth Poetry Workshop once a month at 3S Artspace with the hope that one result of her term will be to have inspired future poet laureates.
